The 3 Reasons Why I am a Book Whore ;)

If you’re like me then you could pay for a second mortgage with the books you buy every month. Now I know what some of you are saying: Scott, you’re crazy!

I might be crazy, but I believe that reading makes you a much better leader and also makes you much smarter (depending on what you read, of course).

If you head over to Amazon (where I buy most of my books) you will see there are about a gazillion books for you to choose from. I myself try to read a book every few days and if it’s a really good book that I can sink my teeth into, then I will read it in a single day.

When I filed my taxes for this last year my tax guy wanted me to print off everything for tax purposes. When I had my assistant print all my Amazon orders it was almost unbelievable the amount of paper she used. She used almost an entire ream of paper (95% of them were books). 😉

So why am I such a book whore? Let me give you some insights into my world when it comes to books.

1. Books Engage the Senses

When you sit down and read a good book, it gets your brain juices flowing and it gets the eye of your mind projecting the words you’re reading. The average person only reads a book or two a year and to me I would lose my head if I only read a book or two a month, let alone a year!

From the research I have found, most readers only read books that are novels and even though that can engage the senses, it’s not going to be as useful to your life to just read novels.

Sad but true.

When you think about it, on any given day the average person does read a crap load — text messages, emails, ads, and a bunch of other crap that leaks into our vision. Yes, these do engage our senses, but are they going to add to our pool of knowledge that will shape our future? Unlikely.

When you start to read the right kinds of books, things will start happening for you.

  • You will sound smarter and talk smarter.
  • You will be far more educated.
  • You will be able to talk with strangers easily.
  • You will start being more creative.
  • You will be able to solve a number of problems in your life.

So what kinds of books to read?

That’s hard for me to say because the last thing I want to tell you is that you need to read certain kinds of books. What I read I love, but it took my own trial and error to find that passion for books. What I like might not have the same effect on you as it does for me.

I love to read books that are within these categories:

Motivational
Leadership
Self-Improvement
Business & Money
Processes & Infrastructure
Self-Help
Health, Fitness & Dieting

The types of books that I do buy and read can change your life, there’s no doubt about that. The categories above are only a few that I regularly read.

2. Reading Gives You Satisfaction

Have you ever just bought a random book and by the time you get to the end you feel uplifted and inspired? Well, if not, then you’re missing out. Almost weekly I get immense satisfaction from the books I buy.

When I grew up I never really liked books. I remember going to elementary school and being forced to attend the book events the school held a few times a year.

At the time, books were something that I didn’t like much. When thinking back to that time I believe it was because the books for sale were books that didn’t satisfy me.

Depends on who you are — you might not read that much in a year because you’re reading the wrong kinds of books. Like my younger self in elementary, I could have cared less about reading because the wrong books were in front of me.

I personally feel quality books matter more than quantity.

There are times when I buy a book and only read a few chapters and can’t move on any further and that’s because either the book is terrible or I just already know what the writer is talking about.

There’s no reason to try and finish a book that’s going to make you grind your teeth through the rest of the book. Also, no point to read a book that’s just old news. I read a lot of books on technology and as you might know, technology changes almost daily so when someone writes a book on social media, for example, it’s stuff I already know because I am in that business.

No point for me to waste time on reading the entire book when the writer is talking about stuff that I picked up months ago. I might skim through the book to find out a tip or two even when I already know the majority of what’s inside the book.

3. Books Are Just a Click Away!

If you look at the world you now have available to you, it’s almost effortlessly easy to buy anything. When you think about it, you can buy almost anything within a few minutes online.

The even better news is that with the power of reviews, on any given item you can have a good idea of what’s good and what’s not so good.

I think one of the major reasons I am such a book whore is that I can go on Amazon for a few minutes and have my cart full of books that would have been a godsend to have back when I was in elementary. I’ve gone into Amazon many times thinking to buy a book or two to read over the weekend and when I go to checkout I have a few thousand dollars of books in my cart.

I need to go to Books Anonymous, it’s that bad sometimes. 🙂

The real truth though is that books are good for you and it might take you a few bad apples to find the style of books you really connect with. For me I love the kinds of books that can add to my intellectual knowledge not only for growing my business, but also my craving to learn as much as I can.

I think as humans we strive to learn as much as we can. The cool thing about learning and reading books is that knowledge is definitely power. I have read books that cost me nothing when you compare the return on investment I got back.

For a $10 book on Amazon to teach me a single tip I can implement into my life and business (which happens all the time) and give me the ability to 2x, 3x, and 5x, my productivity, it’s worth thousands to me.

In a sad, but true example people spend tens of thousands of dollars on MBAs for business when it’s been more than proven that MBAs don’t do crap for you. Well, I stand corrected, they give you the right to have a piece of paper that cost you $300,000 which is not impressive in my eyes.

If it’s an MBA you seek to grow your knowledge to further your business or to gain a higher level position, then you should pick up a book like The Personal MBA by Josh Kaufman (a damn good book by the way).

Conclusion

Books are my friends and I wouldn’t be where I am in my life and business without books. I have not only been able to change the path and outcome of my business, books have helped me change countless other lives by the knowledge I have gained from them.

If you think books aren’t as powerful as I say they are, go ask Warren Buffett (who’s net worth is around $65 billion) if he thinks books matter. My guess is that he will say … yes. The dude reads like a machine!

Most people go though life not really getting any smarter. Why? They simply won’t do the work required to get smarter (and they don’t read enough).
